What my clients say

Throughout my career I’ve worked with people from all walks of life, generic putting them on the path to career success. Please have a look at how some of them describe the impact my coaching has had on them…

I have had my first session with Mary after experiencing the shock of unemployment after a career of 25 year but  I  am definitely planning to have more! Mary is a wonderful mixture of very supportive but also pragmatic and focused. She is full of wisdom and has helped me to see that job hunting is a science-a discipline that needs to be mastered. She told me to apply myself ‘diligently’ to finding a job and that word sums up her process. I would highly recommend Mary and her invaluable and down to earth knowledge of how to achieve careers success. Lucie Russell   Third Sector

It was confirmed yesterday evening and staff were told this morning. It has been a crazy day!  I’m not really sure what they thought of my presentation but something did the trick! Thank you again for the support you gave to me through the process – it really helped. Lynda Sagona – New Chief Executive, United Welsh

Mary’s knowledge of the recruitment world, combined with her winning interview techniques massively increased my confidence during the interview process – and helped me succeed.  She was honest (about my first CV attempt), questioning (about the impact my achievements had made) and supportive (when I called her before every stage of the process).   I think anyone looking for a job should have a Mary Hope in their life. HR Director London

`I found Mary’s input into a recent job interview very supportive and helpful. She is generous with her time, and objective and thorough in her feedback. In the stressful run-up to the interview she provided clear and helpful guidance, and kept me firmly on track.

`I recommend Mary highly as a combination of critical friend and professional ally, which is what I needed to go into the interview with enhanced confidence’  John Knight

I just wanted to say Thank you for your help with my interview technique. I went along to my interview at xxx Foods and then a further interview at HQ  where I had to do a  presentation on salads after an intensive weekend benchmarking the market, but I forgot my nerves as I enjoyed the challenge and then got told I had the job the next day!

My new job starts on Monday!!   Jenny Clarkson – now of Worksop

I was offered an Assistant Director role at the end of last week. I know I did a far better job and was more confident as a result of our discussions – thank you so much for your insights and assistance, clearly they paid off! -Helen

Went well this morning I think – used some of your suggested structures for answers and ‘chemistry’ seemed good with interviewer (on video link at his request). Al

Just to let you know the interview went well. I got over my nerves and working with you on the prep was really helpful. DP

The sessions were thought provoking and challenging. I was able to be honest about my strengths and weaknesses and how, by using the techniques I learnt how I could promote myself more effectively. The sessions were also good fun and I have no doubt I will reap the rewards in due course. –JChambers Shepway

My time with Mary proved to be very short but very effective. She taught me valuable insights into how my CV is perceived by others. Mary was tactful but honest and her wisdom helped my CV be effective enough to get 2 job offers in 2 days after applying for months for various positions and never getting to interview stage.  L Marshall,  Somerset

From a personal and business perspective, I have found the extensive experience you have of working in the recruitment sector invaluable as you provide a sector insight and use examples of real recruitment you have managed to make your point. The e-newsletter, information, and advice on how to apply new media (Linked in/Twitter) has also been really useful. I very much valued your honest approach – I feel confident that you give a true perspective that challenges me in a constructive way. In particular, I feel confident that you won’t let me get away with ‘rationalising’ behaviour that is not matching my expressed aims –in a firm but nice way. Useful sounding board to develop strategies to deal with difficult situations – both in relation to people and the business. Overall, I’ve taken a lot from the sessions and this has benefited me both on a individual and professional level’.

Excellent. You focused on my issues and listened well. You are clearly customer focused.  You grasped what i wanted early on and provided clearly information.Things that made the most difference. I found you highly informative. You responded well to my agenda. You are easy to talk to and were clear on things like taxes, VAT , the brief, my CV , practical stuff.

The experience of being coached by Mary has been challenging and educative in equal measure. I have found her ability to dig a little beyond the obvious and to enable me to place what is discovered in a coherent framework revealing and rewarding. Mary’s approach is warm and supportive – I was never in any doubt that she was on my side – but sharp enough to ensure that difficult issues, areas to address and behaviours that are unhelpful are addressed as an integral part of the process.

Your book was incredibly useful, and it was a great comfort to me to know that I could turn to your professional expertise if it was needed. I should be starting a new, excellent new job in the next few months (precise date has not been fixed).
Once again, I am sincerely grateful for your support and help.  Just knowing you were there if required was a great comfort to me.

Hello Mary,  Good news at last!!

I achieved my goals and got a job within 10 weeks of being made redundant. It really helped understanding my personal motivators, helped me to identify  and describe my skills and experiences.  It was challenging and difficult some of the time but in hindsight it was worth it and personal goals achieved

Each session had specific goals – initially I was struggling with my job search which was getting nowhere on the back of repeated unsuccessful interviews; subsequently I found Mary’s guidance invaluable in preparing for two interviews and also in reviewing an unsuccessful job application. The opportunity to gain a qualified second opinion on my existing strategies and methods and to offer guidance and thoughts on additional methods and additional things to consider in preparing for an interview; Mary is also very flexible in responding promptly to rather short notice requests for support! Mary’s manner is professional with a sense of fun and she is enjoyable to work with, never condescending. It has been good to know that Mary is genuinely experienced  in this field and has practical advice based on her own experiences. To date, I have found Mary’s guidance invaluable and I have appreciated her being almost “on call” and at short notice when the need arises. Of particular relevance: her thoughts and guidance in the presentation and content of my CV;  the conversations prior to a scheduled interview which are useful as a qualified second opinion and in terms of being a morale boost that I have done sufficient preparation and feel ready to face the real event! I would recommend Mary on this basis and wholly anticipate booking further sessions with her in future. I would also recommend Mary’s assistance to recruiters based on my experiences and would anticipate doing so myself in future.

I would really like to thank you for your coaching sessions as the provided a really firm foundation for my job hunting and also helping with my confidence when the ‘forces of xxxxx’ seemed determined to undermine my morale and abilities. In the end my job hunting was kept fairly focused and managed to get some interesting interviews but kept being pipped at the post. But these were learning experiences and combining that with some of the principles covered by your sessions helped me raise my game in my last 2 interviews both of which ended in job offers (within 2.5 hours of each other yesterday!).

I got offered the xxxxx job this morning and have accepted. Will start next Monday.

Thank you for your help last week.  I did get through to the next stage of the process.  I knew the content of my presentation was excellent  -as it set out what I would do rather than talk about the subject.  The feedback was that I did really well, structured answers but that it was a conversation rather than a formal interview which they liked.   In essence I was myself.

The first real step someone facing redundancy needs to do is accept  that the chances of re-entering the labour market are greatly enhanced if you get professional, focussed emotionally intelligent and bespoke coaching. Mary has all of these qualities in abundance and the most important value she demonstrates is to draw out the expertise you have within you. I felt really supported with the highly supportive yet professional approach which Mary specialises in. The coaching sessions which I had with Mary were both discursive and action based so that I felt I had the best of both worlds in a coaching situation. Mary showed me how to capture my professional achievements, develop a productive and meaningful CV and gave me invaluable interview technique advice. The outcome from this support gave me the empowerment and confidence to apply for new positions and it wasn’t long before I was offered a new job. I particularly drew strength from her high quality analytical and diagnostic approach which gave me the direction and self awareness needed to apply for new positions and as a result I highly commend her.’

I wanted to work with Mary to get a much stronger sense of my brand and it’s been really very productive to discover exactly what I know and what I could use it for. It has helped me to learn how to present what I have got in a much better way.       Daljit Sandhu, London

It was great to meet up today. Thank you so much for helping me sort out my plan for progressing with the start of my business. It was so worthwhile to talk about working out my ideas and to get  personal advice on how to approach the development of this business. My head was buzzing with ideas afterwards and our meeting certainly helped to inspire me to go further, network as much as possible and look closely at the development of  successful  business models similar to the one I wish to promote. Lots to be going on with!

“How would I describe Mary Hope? No-nonsense, and enables one to get straight to the heart of things, trustworthy and generally a down to earth really good person to have in your life.

“I was recommended to Mary as I felt the need to work on an ‘edge’ for my consultancy business. Before my first appointment with her I had the option of applying for a two year contract. A 20 min phone call to Mary (bearing in mind we had hardly spoken prior to this) and I had a first draft (2 pages). A further coaching call plus a couple of suggestions by email later and it was done.

“I then used Mary’s vast skill base to coach me in advance of a very daunting 7 stage interview process and I got the job – don’t think I need to say any more apart from she is inspirational and I trust her with my insecurities!”

Ann W – Director – Voluntary Sector

“I asked Mary to develop and deliver a training program to develop the ability of our staff to build better relationships with clients. She called this ‘Engaging Effectively with Clients’. On the course she ensured staff really understood the importance of engaging with clients both in terms of retention and cross selling. Her sessions on rapport building and how to get clients to open up were excellent in content and delivered with humour and pace. Most importantly Mary went to great lengths to ensure the the staff were able to embed the learning in their practice and we are confident that with increased understanding and increased skills we will see increased client referrals and more opportunities for providing additional services.”

Neville Beckhurst – Partner – Plummer Parsons

“Working with Mary has provided me with both the space and time to think and ask questions about my career to date and where I want to be in the future. Mary is able to focus in on and ask questions that are challenging and sometimes difficult but always helpful. In doing so she provides a clear structure and set of tools – tailored to my requirements – to facilitate this. This work has been invaluable in defining my future career goals but also in articulating what I need to do to achieve these.”

AE – Surrey

“When I approached Mary I was entering a period of change and had some ideas about what to do but I wasn’t sure. I thought she was very good at coaching me to follow my instinct. She helped me look at the other people’s point of view and what they wanted out of the problem so that I positioned my approach in the right way. She helped me work out how to act so that I acted with integrity whilst persuading the other party to take another path. Her suggested approach opened my eyes to a different way of dealing with people.

“She is very good at asking the difficult questions, especially those that I would like to avoid thinking about! I’m glad I used her since she helped me get quickly to resolution in a number of difficult areas. I am currently very happy in my new role heading up the company and am loving it.”

CJ – MD Healthcare – London

“The sessions with Mary were challenging (but always enjoyable) making me think about what I realised had become my ‘default’ ambitions, and as a consequence opening up other opportunities.”

ID – Management Consultant – London

“When I first met Mary I had been in a new role senior role for about 15 months. My problem was the extensive hours I was working were having a significant impact on my home life. So my objective was simple – reduce my work time while remaining an effective manager. Mary is helping me explore who I am and why I feel the need to work so many hours. Mary’s guiding approach is helping me develop my own solution and giving me confidence to implement it. I now feel in the best position and on top of the work for the first time in this role.”

JC – Head of Service – Local Authority

“Mary has enabled me and encouraged me to look at a wide range of options and has given me the confidence to consider opportunities that I would not necessarily have considered. I have felt empowered to make approaches that have been valuable in helping me to build my profile. It is still early days for me but my sessions with Mary always leave me buoyed up, have developed my ability to look at my skills and experience afresh and enabled me to reach conclusions about going forward in this new phase.

“I found her approach to analysing my skills invaluable and the help in redrafting my CV, having been out of the ‘market’ for some time was illuminating. The sessions were well organised and rigorous with excellent follow up to ensure that ‘homework’ was completed. Mary’s approach is very thorough and disciplined. They were of enormous benefit in enabling me to make the transition.”

FD – London Borough Director

“I have recently had a coaching session in preparation for an application to XXX. She is able to offer guidance on the competency based system used them, which is invaluable if you are not used to this type of process. Mary gave excellent advice, she has a direct but friendly approach and I highly recommend her. She offers a fantastic service at a reasonable price.”

Debra Martin – West Sussex

“I have recently had some coaching sessions with Mary to clarify my key strengths, focus my disparate efforts and streamline my overly heavy CV. I knew Mary’s previous experience meant she would be able to specifically help me with this, as well as with interview technique, but she has given me so much more. And all with warmth and a sense of humour. I particularly valued the very systematic process we went through to identify my skills and had a real penny-dropping moment understanding what I should be doing with my CV and exactly how to do it. We have reduced it from four pages to two and a half, with my ‘gold dust’ now on page one! This in itself is going to increase my chances of selection and I have already booked my sessions to be held later when preparing for interviews.”

Amanda Halliwell – North London

“Following redundancy I was lucky enough to be pointed in Mary’s direction by a former colleague. Immediately I found Mary someone I was able to establish a good rapport with, she’s open, very professional but has a sense of humour. This was achieved despite the fact that I had not, and have still not, met Mary face-to-face because of our different locations. My initial few sessions with Mary focused on my CV, which with Mary’s guidance went from too many, to just 2 sides, and very much focused on my key achievements. We then moved on to sessions focused on what I really wanted to do and the type of organisation that I would be comfortable working for, those sessions were really helpful in helping me make the right choices. Finally Mary’s experience of recruitment helped me refine and improve my interview technique. I now have a new job and Mary’s support was invaluable in getting me there.”

Peter Cosgrove – Cheshire

“Coaching with Mary Hope has had a major impact on my well being. It is so valuable to have a witness and validation, and I have learned that effective changes can be made in a simple and progressive way. It has been so effective, I have made positive steps forward.”

Social Worker – Kent

“Through the sessions I have become more confident in handling situations that life can throw up and you. I have connected with inner calmness and I don’t feel so anxious as I did before the sessions. Thank you so much, I found your sessions very liberating and down-to-earth at the same time.”

IM – Creative Educator – Sussex

“Initially it wouldn’t have occurred to me to use Executive Coaching to develop myself but the time I have invested with Mary Hope has reaped significant dividends in terms of both my performance and future prospects.”

Chief Executive – Sussex

“I heard a few days ago I had passed my oboe exam. Thanks for your help in this matter, I’m sure it made all the difference and I will use the techniques in future, so please clock this up as one of your successes.”

Adult Candidate for Grade 6 – ES Cumbria

“Just a short note to thank you for your recent advice! It certainly helped with my interview technique during the very comprehensive and gruelling selection process for XXXX. I am absolutely delighted with my new role and have confirmed my start date.”

JM – Corporate Director

“Coaching with Mary Hope has enabled me to view problems/challenges in a systematic calm manner and in bite size chunks, it helps me to find solutions. I was surprised by how much it helps having someone actively listening, rather than trying to do this alone. I was also surprised to realise the range of skills I have! My confidence has increased. I don’t feel hemmed in. I used to panic about my situation, but now I feel calmer; having the knowledge that there are lots of options out side of this work situation has helped me to feel clearer about what I need to do to change this one.”

FM – West Sussex

“Mary’s sessions helped me move on from an unhappy working life to a job and a career I love, and what’s more I am getting so much more out of it through Mary’s careful guidance. Mary’s step-by-step sessions were like someone turning on a light and at the end of each one I felt like I had learned something about myself, what I wanted from my career and was ready to spring into action. Within a couple of sessions I already felt so much more positive and within a few months I had ‘the interview’. Again Mary was there to guide and support and I breezed through it. Three months on and I am happier than ever before, not just because I have a job I love and a career path but because I have discovered so much about the person I am, my personal qualities and what I can bring to the workplace. Mary’s coaching has has a tremendous effect on my working life, I can’t thank her enough. I’ll be back for more!”
